FAQ

Frequently asked questions about self containment certification in NZ

So what exactly is self containment?

To be self-contained, your campervan or caravan must be able to comply with the requirements outlined in the NZS 5465:2001 self-containment standard. The standard states that "a certified self-contained vehicle meets the occupants' ablutionary and sanitary needs for a minimum of three days without requiring any external services or discharge

Why should I get my vehicle certified self contained?

Having a self-contained vehicle allows you to free camp in some of New Zealand's best camping areas, often for free. You cannot use the hundreds of designated Self-Contained Areas without it, and you may be fined for freedom camping.

What happens if my vehicle does not pass the self containment test?

If you fail the self-containment test, you will be given a list of the required changes to bring your vehicle up to the self-containment standard. You can then make your changes, and we'll retest the vehicle once you're finished. Because the retest is free, you only have to pay for testing once.

Why is a vent required for my waste tank?

All waste tanks, whether fixed or portable, must be vented to prevent pressure building up and allow for easy drainage. The vent must be at least 10mm in diameter (25mm recommended). The vent must extend to the vehicle's flood line (the point at which the system would flood into the vehicle if overfilled) and then finish outside.

Why do I need a water seal/smell trap?

A water seal/smell trap is required in the drain pipe from any outlet (sink etc) to the grey water tank. The purpose is to create a barrier in the drainpipe, preventing sewer gas from rising back up through the drain and into the van.

What does the blue certified self contained (CSC) sticker mean?

The blue responsible camper sticker does not verify certification, but it was introduced to help council enforcement officers quickly identify a vehicle's certified self contained (CSC) status. We recommend that you display both the sticker and the warrant card.
