SELF CONTAINMENT REQUIREMENTS

June 2023 Update

Please be aware, as of June 2023 the Self-contained Motor Vehicles Legislation Act is law. Vehicles with a portable toilet are no longer able to be certified self-contained. More information from MBIE can be found here.

Minimum Requirements

  • Tank for drinking water. (12 litres for each person)

  • Non-toxic fresh water supply hose that is opaque or coloured.

  • Sink.

  • Grey water tank with a vent (12 litres per person)

  • 3 metre evacuation hose (If the grey water tank is fixed in place).

  • Rubbish bin with a lid.

  • Toilet (permanently fixed) that can be used inside the vehicle at all times, including when the bed is fully assembled. Minimum of 3 litres of capacity per person

Note; this is only a summary of the Self-contained Motor Vehicles Legislation Act 2023, applicable until June 2025. Depending on your specific setup, other considerations include materials, quality, positioning, and dimensions.
